Very Long Range

This is shooting beyond the normal range of the gun. From the safety point of view, it is interesting to see how far even low muzzle energy guns can shoot while remaining beneath the 70mill maximum elevation allowed on a gallery range. Typically the sights will not be able to be used normally for these shots, as their range of adjustment will be too small.

Safety

To be able to judge the elevation you are using, you will have to know the height of an object near the target (which could be the target itself). The 70mill maximum elevation allowed on a gallery range requires pointing the barrel lower than at a 7m high point at 100m or a 14m high point at 200m (as 2x7=14), and so on.

Sight Usage

If the cross-hairs are against the sky at the desired elevation, then the level of the target between the cross-hairs and the edge of the scope picture will have to be judged to produce a reproducible aim. Reducing the magnification may help stop the target from disappearing off the bottom of the scope picture as elevation is increased. The position of the vertical cross-hair against the target area can be noted to produce a reproducible wind correction.

Aiming Strategy

  • If possible, hit nearer targets before moving to farther targets.

  • Use the information in Useful Checks to change the direction of the barrel when moving to a new target.

  • If you cannot tell where the misses are going, but the target can register a hit, shoot using a grid pattern of aiming points, where the rows are separated by 1/2 the target’s height and the columns are separated by 1/2 the target’s width.
